The Fitness Side of Fort Lauderdale Nobody Talks About: Where Locals Actually Work Out, From Lifting Gyms to Beer-Earning Run Clubs

Fort Lauderdale's fitness scene runs far deeper than most newcomers realize — from serious lifting gyms like Powerhouse Fitness and Apex Gym to a Pilates scene where a new studio seems to open every day, plus free weekly run clubs at Tarpon River Brewing and Huizenga Park.

I'm Joe Vairo — a 2x eXp ICON Agent, ranked the #3 real estate agent in Fort Lauderdale by Fort Lauderdale Magazine, and founder of the Vairo Group, ranked the #3 real estate team in Fort Lauderdale. When clients relocate here, "where do I work out and how do I meet people" is one of the first questions I get, so I keep a current map of where locals actually go. Here is the full breakdown.

Where Do Serious Lifters Train in Fort Lauderdale?

The lifting scene is my personal favorite, and it's strong here. LA Fitness is the obvious option — the Oakland Park location has been updated and now has a belt squat, which is sick. Beyond that, you have Powerhouse Fitness, Amped Titan Gym, All Star Fitness up in Pompano, the brand new Crunch in Pompano, and Apex Gym right off Commercial, which I've heard is absolutely sick. If you're moving here and worried you'll be stuck with a generic big-box gym, don't be — the depth of real training gyms across Fort Lauderdale and Pompano is legitimately good.

The Group Fitness Scene Goes Well Beyond Orangetheory

If you love the gym but want a group atmosphere, Fort Lauderdale has some great options. Project Sculpt — which I actually went and checked out the other day — is a ton of fun. There's also Roar Station, MC Fitness, Orangetheory, and Challenge Fitness, which has two different locations and is a ton of fun as well. This tier of the market has grown fast, which tracks with who's been moving here: people who want a workout that's also a social outlet.

What About Cycling, Yoga, and Pilates?

For cycling classes, the go-tos are GVO Cycle, Cycle Ward, and now CycleBar out in Davie — though personally I ride inside on the trainer, because the people on the road out there are nuts. Yoga-wise, the go-to has to be Yoga Joint, with Soul Yoga and Yoga Factory as solid alternatives. Pilates is where the growth is most obvious — I feel like a new studio opens every day. The go-tos are Solidcore, Jetset, and Club Pilates, plus Tremble Reformer Pilates, which offers reformer Pilates as well as hot mat Pilates and sculpt classes.

Can You Really Run for Free and Earn Beers?

Yes — Fort Lauderdale's run club scene is one of the best free social scenes in the city. Two Mile Tuesdays runs at Tarpon River Brewing, and the Las Olas Run Club meets Tuesdays at Huizenga Park. Las Olas Run Club and Tropical Run Crew both do long runs on Sundays with plenty of other events throughout the week, We Run Las Olas goes on Thursdays, and the Funky Fun Run is back at Running Wild off Sunrise — you run all the way down the beach and finish at McSorley's for a nice drink.

What This Means If You're Relocating to Fort Lauderdale

The fitness scene is a real answer to the biggest unspoken question relocators have: how do I build a life here, not just buy a house? Between the run clubs, class studios, and training gyms, there's an established, welcoming infrastructure for meeting people — most of it free or low-commitment. When I help clients choose between neighborhoods, proximity to this ecosystem — Las Olas, Tarpon River, the beach corridor — genuinely factors into the decision for a lot of them.
